My research combines materials synthesis, spectroscopy, and Monte Carlo simulations to understand exciton dynamics in low-dimensional materials. I am studying exciton diffusion in the model quasi-1D material, CrPS₄, whose unique crystal structure causes anisotropic exciton diffusion within 2D sheets of 1D chains. Exciton dynamics are probed with time-resolved spectroscopies, while doping and alloying are used to capture and scatter excitons, clocking exciton arrival and interchain hopping dynamics. Physical results are modeled with Monte Carlo simulations to compare with experimental trends. The fundamental understanding of exciton dynamics in 2D materials can enable the broader investigation of excitons in materials like 2D lead-halide and 2D iodide double perovskites. These insights can guide the design of more efficient solar technologies, supporting CEI’s mission of clean energy adoption.
