The integration of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar energy, reduces the controllability of the electric power system, and the system operators are putting efforts on dispatching energy over a time period by installing non-generation resources (NGR) such as storage and demand response, transforming traditional power systems into energy systems. The employment of NGR units in grid services requires new schemes in market operation and reliability modeling. NGR units can participate in the energy market as well as some grid control services, the profit-driven operation of NGR units in these markets creates an impact on the system reliability and total cost. Analyzing these factors can reveal the actual value of NGR units in the energy system, and can contribute to the design of power system market schemes as well as to quantify the reliability of energy systems and determine the NGR capacity required to achieve a desired level of reliability.
